When a Helmet Ain't Enough
Ephesians 6:13 / Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground
When I was a young kid, I had this fascination with knocking down wasps nests with a stick. “Yeah, you already know where this is heading………….”
During summer breaks from school I would wake up in the morning watch cartoons then off to the garage to get my trusty sword (broom stick) to defeat the evil wasps. I would cruise around the neighborhood looking for really big nests. The more wasps I could make mad at one time the more fun it was.
This one particular morning in the garage I noticed my Dallas Cowboys football helmet I got the previous Christmas. I quickly thought to myself, “This would make great armor to keep me safe from the angry wasps.” Reality is I had no shirt on! I was a kid wearing a pair of shorts being barefoot with a Dallas Cowboys football helmet walking around Gloucester Ct. in Irving, TX. with a stick.
Looking back at that now, I prolly didn’t have all my marbles back then…..in other words, I was not really thinking about what I was doing. The funny looks I received as people passed by in their cars make total sense to me now.
So, there I was with my armor and my trusty sword. I knew the wasps could not get to me because I had on my helmet of protection.
The prior day I had dismantled all the wasps nests on my street, so I was about to make war with the enemy across the street. (Yes, I looked both ways before crossing!)
It took me several minutes to get to the gem of a house. The gem being the biggest wasp nest I had ever seen in all my wasp nest slaying years.
I took my very confident self over to get in position to take down this wasp castle. Then without hesitation I aimed and swung the stick. “BULLSEYE!!!!”
As I began to celebrate I did not realize that Castle Wasp was stuck on the top of my stick, As I looked up, the nest in slow motion began to fall and the nest was coming directly for me. But I froze I could not move. My legs would not let me retreat. The nest came down and the wasps attacked. I immediately got stung several times, that is when my feet re-educated themselves on what “RUN” means. By the time I got home and to the hospital (Yes, mom had to drive me to the emergency room) I had been stung 24 times and I was swollen all over.
Yes, its ok to laugh…..
But there is a lesson here for our lives based on the Bible verse I used up top. You see, many of us are walking around with our Helmet of Salvation on and we think that is all the armor we need.
“I am saved, WOOHOO, I’m done!”
We forget about the Belt of Truth and the Breastplate of Righteousness and we lack having our feet fitted for readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. What about the shield of Faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
So, those of you who are walking around with your helmet on, do you seriously think you can protect yourself just with the helmet. You think the enemy is that weak? Man, the Bible says that Satan is out to destroy you. In Job he tells God he has been walking to and fro on the earth. Which proves he cannot be at all places at all times like the almighty God, but Satan is cruising around looking to ruin your life. He is on planet earth! Satan doesn’t care the tactic, he just wants the end result. “He wants to just jack up your life!”
And there you are with your helmet on!!! Still feel safe?
You’d better put on what? The FULL ARMOR of GOD so when Satan does show up you take your trusty broom stick and you beat him in the head with it.
